It has been a year of resignations and moving on for Gagasi FM. Earlier this year, DJs Nonkululeko "LeSoul" Mdlalose and Bongani Gina left their jobs at the radio station to seek greener pastures. This week, radio veteran, Makhosi Khoza has also downed his tools leaving his show the SundayChill Zone from 2 PM until 6PM.
REASONS FOR LEAVING
All these resignations have happened in a short space of time, leaving listeners to question the internal politics and management. Makhosi joined Gagasi FM in 2019. With over 30 years of experience, he has worked at 702, East Coast Radio, Radio 2000 and Durban Youth Radio. "There is no drama or bad blood. Radio takes up a lot of your time, and I am leaving to focus on other ventures," he tells ZiMoja.
NO HARD FEELINGS
Taking over from Makhosi is Alex Mthiyane until the position is filled. Although Makhosi and Gagasi FM management deny any bad blood, some of the internal staff he left due to management interfering with his decisions. "He didn't have enough creative freedom. He is highly experienced, but he was not allowed to contribute much to the content," a staff member says. But Makhosi insists there was no fight. "Absolutely none, I just want to venturei nto other avenues within the same industry." Makhosi is set to release a memoir titled Ngizolalela Emsakazweni about his life as a radio broadcaster, his experiences, and his life history. "I am also working on a TV show which requires attention and for me to focus. It doesn't mean when these are done. I won't go back to the radio. But everything I do; I want to give it my full attention."
