THE CHARGES
In 2018, Lerato accused the comedian of rape while they were working in the Western Cape. She said the incident happened in 2014. "For many years, I have been battling to find the courage and support to speak up against a number of acts of violence which have happened to me," Lerato penned in a statement. "In 2014, I was sexually assaulted and raped by Mongezi ?Toll A$$ Mo' Mahlangu while working on a television production in Paarl, Western Cape. For numerous reasons, I did not open a case at the time and only shared this experience with one of the other participants on the show." The rape allegations led to Mongezi being "cancelled" by society and it resulted in him not being able to make an income to support his wife and three children.
ACQUITTED
Two years later, Mongezi was vindicated and acquitted of all charges leveled against him by the court of law. The court found Lerato to be a 'dishonest and unreliable' witness. In a statement by his legal team, he revealed that he was found not guilty by a court of law. "During this two-year ordeal, our family's silence was not an admission of guilt, but rather a decision to respect the justice system ? and not the court of public opinion ? to follow due course, and rule in favour of the truth. My family and I condemn gender-based violence in the strongest form, and we have the utmost sympathy and empathy with real victims in this regard. However, false and malicious allegations of this nature is a serious issue and can negatively impact people's lives in the long run," Toll A$$ Mo's statement read.
He threatened charges of defamation, slander, and civil charges against Lerato. This is due to the loss of income throughout the two years and total legal costs. Despite being acquitted, Lerato said she will prove he is guilty. "In the past two months, I have been served with letters from his attorneys to remove my tweets. A protection order was then applied against me along with an interim order demanding that I delete my tweets and effectively attempting to silence me just after I found my voice to speak about my experiences. This culminated in an arrest warrant being issued against me and my subsequent imprisonment."? Toll A$$ Mo has since started an organisation to help people who face false accusations that could see them spend time behind bars. With the help of a private investigator Mike Bolhuis, they will help victims who find themselves in similar situations.
