Raunchy drama The Black Door coming to an end after declined ratings

Zamani Mbatha played the role of Khaya, a sex worker.

When the show started, it was on everyone's lips. They dared go where other TV shows wouldn't. Their content explored the raunchy, 18SN age-restriction. But sadly, The Black Door is coming to an end.

A DROP IN VIEWERSHIP?

This comes after a decline in viewership. "Well, they started on a good note. People were excited about seeing something different on TV, but many others complained about the steamy sex scenes and the channel decided to tone it down," a source tells ZiMoja. "But then that affected the show negatively, as people signed up for the steamy and the provocative. This caused a decline in viewership," the insider adds. The show was commissioned for 260 episodes that started filming in February 2022 just outside Johannesburg but the contract will not be renewed.

IT'S A WRAP

The show is barely a year old and is just left with three weeks before it comes to an end and will be airing its season finale over three weeks starting from 1 May 2023. Produced by Black Brain Pictures, responsible for making TV shows Lockdown, Vula Vala, and SesTop La, this is the third show the company is losing in the last two years. Last year, co-founder Mandla N announced the end of Diep City, which left many heartbroken and some actors unemployed. "It's never easy wrapping a show. I'll forever be humbled and grateful for the passion, hard work, and love every single cast and crew member put into this story," Mandla said. The Black Door leaves actors Zamani Mbatha, Linda Sebezo, and many others unemployed. When called for comment Black Brain founder Mandla N confirmed the news but said, all details will be shared on Monday.
