‘Our hearts are broken' - Radio veteran and voiceover artist passes on

Bongani Njoli gave 17 years of his life as a voiceover artist and over 20 years as a DJ.

He is the captivating voice behind the e-tv promos that many adored. If you thought it was some mysterious automated sound that did the 'Friday Action Night' promos, think again. Many described his tone as articulate and enchanting. Radio veteran Bongani Njoli (54) died on Sunday, 22 January after falling ill. ?

MOURNING THE LOSS?

Having worked as a voiceover artist for 17 years, e-TV commends his fighting spirit. You never went down without a fight. Our hearts are broken. Your voice will never be forgotten. Lala Ngoxolo Bongani Njoli.' eMedia also expressed their sadness in a statement. "Everyone at the e.tv family is deeply saddened by the sudden loss of Bongani Njoli. As the most recognisable voice of our Friday Action Night movie promos and weekend blockbusters, "Bongs" was a true legend and part of the e family for 17 years.'

Bongani started feeling weak in December 2022. "His untimely passing comes as a shock; he was in the studio with us in December 2022 for a new movie campaign. But unfortunately, as he was too weak to record, we put the campaign on hold,' the statement says. "A part of our history is gone with his passing, but we will forever remember him as "the voice' - our voice. Those of us who worked closely with him will sorely miss Njoli's easy-going, gentle manner and utter professionalism. We have reached out to the family and will be making a contribution to the funeral.'

TRIBUTES POUR IN FOR BONGS' FAMILY?

Friends and colleagues offer their condolences to the Njoli family and expressed their grief.

Graeme Raubenheimer: "He was the golden voice behind e-TV'son-air promos and a gentleman of note in the short exchanges I had with Bongani Njoli, who insisted he only wanted a few rands for "some beers" to record this amazing voiceover work for our old rock podcast Radio Spookasem. Your voice lives on, bra Bongs. RIP.'

Patrick Cromwell: Lala Ngoxolo Bonagni Njoli. Woke up to the sad news this morning of your passing. I am privileged to have worked with you in November last year and the laughter we shared will never be forgotten. We won't tell anyone about the Irish Coffee. Spin those vinyls, turn up the volume andlet all hear your voice and that awesome laugh echo over the hills. We will miss you but you will never be forgotten.'

Koketso Sachane: "One day a conversation will be had about the level of utter disrespect shown to people who gave of themselves to groom and nurture a generation of broadcasters, voice artists, and DJs. We see you and are waiting for a signal. #RIPBonganiNjoli

Adam Goodman: Hamba Khale Bongs. I was truly blessed to have worked with you at ETV from 2003 - 2012 and it was an honour and a privilege. You were 'the voice of ETV' and so much more.
