Limpopo born singer Makhadzi has denied allegations that she is being sued R8.2 million by her partners for failing to promote her Khokovha sneakers. Makhadzi told Zimoja that she was in the dark about being sued. "I don't know what you are talking about. I have never been to any court. Nobody contacted me about being sued- no lawyer or partners have ever made contact with me. It's a blue lie,' said Makhadzi before hanging up. But founder and CEO of Kicks Sammy Mhaule confirmed to ZImoja that, "we are suing Makhadzi and Open Mic for the breach of contract."
DRAGGING MAKHADZI TO THE HIGH COURT
It is alleged that Kicks Sportwear, the company producing Kokovha has dragged Makhadzi and her company Open Mic to the Pretoria High Court for breaching the terms and conditions of their partnership agreement, which stipulate that the singer performs wearing the sneakers and promotes the brand on social media platforms. The Kokovha sneakers were launched in December at the Mall of Africa in Midrand. According to reports ,Makhadzi must participate in a number of activities arranged by Kicks Sportswear. This includes participation through a series of social media posts both on Kicks Sportswear social media accounts and also on Makhadzi's social media accounts. They also include event appearances, speaking engagements and media interviews ,following guidelines as set out by the corporation and its agencies. In the court papers , Zimoja has seen, Kicks Sportswear states that, "The plaintiff therefore claims damages for the following: The units of shoes in the warehouse being 6?900pairs, less 20 pairs, sold in Limpopo, thus being 6880 shoes at the retail price they would have sold, for if first and second defendants did not breach the partnership agreement, thus amounting to R8?249?120." Lionel Jamela, who is the co-owner of Open Mic, a label Makhadzi is signed to refused to comment on the matter and said they would release a statement in due course.
NAMED AFTER HER PROJECT
Makhadzi launched the Khokovha sneaker collection, named after her 2020 project, after she signed a mega deal estimated to be worth R120 million with sportswear brand, Kicks. Mhaule once posted on the deal on Instagram and how significant this deal was. "I wanted to provide an African alternative by creating Africa's first best sports brand to the world that can compete internationally. "My vision is to turn the legacy of Kicks Sportswear into a material force that transforms the destinies of the unemployed and a platformf or entrepreneurs,' he wrote on Instagram.
