Massiv Metro facing closure?

Penny Lebyane left the station recently

After the sudden departure of media personality Penny Lebyane from Massiv Metro, things seem to be getting worse at the online radio station. ZiMoja has learnt that the station might be closing shop as soon as next week. The station was founded in May 2017, but is apparently not doing well. Another popular face that was part of the on-air personalities, was businessman, DJ Sbu. DJ Sbu announced his exit at the station in 2021 citing other business interests that he was pursuing. He went on to open a YouTube channel.

 PENNY LEBYANE QUITTING

When she quit the station, Lebyane took to Twitter to announce her departure."Please note I have parted ways with the online digital platform #massivmetro after a successful four years run, first as Massiv morning host the #phly 3to5daily" she wrote. According to the source, her contract ended, and she did not want to renew it as she was focusing her energies on her production company. But the source says she was not happy about certain things at the station. "Penny is a professional when it comes to broadcasting. She couldn't stand the unprofessional conduct at the station" the source added

THE ONCE POPULAR STATION

When the in-taxi commuter radio station started, within six months, they reached an accumulative weekly audience of 700 000 listeners. The station also had well known names in the industry when it started with media personality Faith Mangope as the station manager. A source at the station said when Lebyane quit, it was only a matter of time before it sank.  It's also reported that the station has issues with the tax man. "Moreover, it looks like there are some monies that were unaccounted for, hence the radio station is closing down," another ZiMoja source added.

?BATTLE OF THE BOSSES

The source says there are too many egos within the station, and everyone wants to be in control. "There are many power-hungry people within the organisation, instead of focusing on bringing in business, it's just issues after issues '' adds the source. The source says the staff has not been told officially that they might lose their jobs as of next week. "They are all scared to ask but, in the corridors, people are talking." Massiv Metro was an urban radio station that delivered authentic content and music to the commuter market in Joburg. The station's audience consisted of taxi drivers, commuters, students, workers and community leaders. From early morning to late at night, commuters at taxi ranks and en route to their destinations were entertained with a mix of music and content that pleased their soul, spoke to their lifestyle and culture
