African Reggae pioneer Carlos Djedje passes away at 71

Carlos Djedje has passed away

The world of music has lost yet another icon, Carlos Djedje, one of Africa's most celebrated reggae music pioneers. Djedje, who was popularly known as the King of the Jungle, passed away at Kalafong Hospital in Pretoria on Monday, 18 December 2023 at the age of 71.

HE WAS A MAVERICK

Born in Mozambique and settled in Pretoria, Carlos Djedje rose to fame in the 1970s as a pioneer of African reggae music. He was not only a legendary music promoter but also an activist and freedom fighter who contributed to the South African liberation struggle project through his music. His death was announced by his label Lioness Production SA in a statement. "We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of the Father of South African reggae, Carlos Djedje. Carlos Djedje's music is a source of inspiration, positivity and resistance. His unique blend of rhythms and powerful lyrics brings comfort and hope to many. His commitment to social justice and the promotion of peace through his music will always be cherished. Rest In Power, Elder Carlos Djedje. Safe trod home to Zion Rasta!"

WELL TRAVELED

Djedje's influence was felt around the world, having travelled to various countries such as Japan, Spain, Sweden, Germany, Soweto, Malaysia, UK, America, eSwatini, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia, just to mention a few. In 2017, he was invited by the government of Jamaica to be honoured and awarded during the celebration of the most celebrated activist in the world, Mwalimu Marcus Mosiah Garvey, for his contribution to reggae music in Africa and the world. "It felt like a dream coming true when I walked on a red carpet with an army and police guard of honour, as I proceeded to lay a wreath at Marcus Garvey's grave after the governor did so," Djedje said in response to the honour. Djedje's music was not just entertainment, it was a voice for the oppressed and marginalised. His lyrics were a call to action for change and justice. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. In collaboration with government representatives and the cultural and creative sector representatives, the family has agreed to celebrate the life of Carlos Djedje. His contribution to African music and culture will never be forgotten.
